How to Tell If Your Hunting Gear Really Fits

The right gear can make or break your hunt. If your jacket’s riding up, your boots are giving you blisters, or your bow feels awkward in your hands, chances are you’ll be distracted — and that’s the last thing you want in the field. For sportswomen, fit matters even more because so much gear has traditionally been built for men.
The good news? You don’t have to settle. Here’s how to tell if your essentials fit the way they should.
Your Hunting Jacket
Your jacket should move with you, not work against you. Try raising your arms, drawing your bow, or shouldering your firearm. If the garment pulls tight across your back, creeps up to your midriff when you move, or gets in the way of a proper mount, it’s not the right fit. You’ll also want room for layering, but not so much that you’re swimming in fabric.
🚩 Red Flags to Look For: Tight shoulders, short hem, bunching, “swish” sound when you move.
Your Boots
Blisters, sore arches, or numb toes? Hard pass. A good hunting boot should lock your heel in place, give your toes just enough wiggle room, and offer support on uneven ground. Take them for a walk before opening day — some boots need breaking in, and you don’t want to find that out halfway up a ridge.
🚩 Red Flags to Look For: Heel slipping, hot spots, no arch support, or toes hitting the front when you hike downhill.
Your Firearm
A shotgun or rifle should feel like an extension of your body. When you shoulder it, your eye should naturally line up with the sights or scope without stretching or straining. Many women find that a shorter length of pull (the distance from the trigger to the end of the stock) makes a world of difference in comfort and accuracy.
🚩 Red Flags to Look For: Having to crane your neck to see through the scope, stock feels too long, or struggling to shoulder quickly and comfortably.
Your Compound Bow
Archery is all about fit. If your draw length is too long, you’ll feel overextended; too short, and you’ll be cramped. The right draw weight should let you pull back smoothly without jerking or wiggling, even after multiple shots. Hold it in your hand — does it feel balanced and steady, or does it want to twist? Trust that gut feeling.
🚩 Red Flags to Look For: Shaky hold at full draw, bow twisting in your grip, feeling overextended or cramped, or struggling to draw consistently.
